Steel plate & coil weight calculator

Work out the theoretical weight of a steel plate (MS, AR or Q&T) or a coil from its size, in kilograms and tonnes. All sizes in millimetres. Tradepass holds AR wear plate, S690QL and CRGO coil at Kalamboli and Faridabad — tap the green button under your result and the size and weight come to us on WhatsApp for a price.

Plate weight

Mild steel (MS), AR wear and Q&T plate, density 7.85 g/cm³.

Coil weight

From the coil's outer and inner diameter and its width; add the thickness to get the strip length. CRGO comes as coils in the widths we hold (no slitting or lamination cutting) — give us your width and we'll confirm the nearest width in stock.

Steel plate & coil weight formula

Plate: weight (kg) = thickness × width × length (mm) × density (g/cm³) ÷ 1,000,000. A 20 mm plate, 2000 × 6000 mm, weighs 20 × 2000 × 6000 × 7.85 ÷ 1,000,000 = 1,884 kg.

Coil: weight (kg) = π ÷ 4 × (outer diameter² − inner diameter²) × width × density ÷ 1,000,000, all in mm. Strip length (m) = weight ÷ (thickness × width × density) × 1,000.

These are theoretical weights from the nominal size at the density shown. Actual plate weight usually runs slightly above theoretical, because mills roll to a plus-biased thickness tolerance (IS 1852 for IS 2062 plate, EN 10029 for AR and Q&T plate) and to plus-only width and length. A coil's weight from its diameters assumes solid, tightly wound steel; thin coated CRGO packs slightly less, so the figure reads slightly high — the coil tag and mill test certificate carry the mill's measured weight. We invoice on actual (weighbridge) weight; a theoretical basis applies only where agreed in writing.
