AR500 Steel Plates

What is AR500 Steel plate?

AR500 steel plate is another grade of abrasion-resistant steel that is known for its high hardness and toughness. Like AR400 and AR450, the "AR" in AR500 stands for "abrasion-resistant," and the number 500 indicates the Brinell hardness number, signifying its high level of hardness.

Key properties include:

Hardness : AR500 steel typically has a hardness of around 500 Brinell, making it even harder than AR400 and AR450. This increased hardness provides exceptional resistance to abrasion

Toughness :Despite its high hardness, AR500 steel maintains good toughness, allowing it to withstand impacts and deformation without fracturing

Weldability : AR500 steel can be welded, but, like other abrasion-resistant steels, precautions are typically taken to avoid issues such as cracking. Preheating and post-weld heat treatment may be necessary depending on the welding method used

Formability :While harder than AR400 and AR450, AR500 steel can still be formed and machined, though it may require more force and specialized equipment

AR500 Steel plate

AR500 steel is widely used in applications where extreme abrasion resistance is required. Common applications include:

Shooting targets : AR500 steel is frequently used to manufacture targets for firearms training and shooting practice due to its durability and ability to withstand repeated impacts.

Armor plate :AR500 is used in the production of armor plate for military and civilian applications, providing protection against ballistic threats.

Mining equipment : AR500 is used in conveyor systems, chutes, and hoppers where materials with abrasive characteristics are transported.

Material handling: AR500 is suitable for use in conveyor systems, chutes, and hoppers where materials with high abrasiveness are transported

When selecting AR500 steel or any abrasion-resistant steel, the choice depends on the specific demands of the application, considering factors such as abrasion resistance, impact resistance, and overall performance.

Steel Plate Sizes

Steel Warehouse can supply the following sizes of AR500 Steel:

  • .25”-0.315” thickness offered in 48”- 65” wide, cut to your requested length
  • .375”-2.00” thickness offered in standard sizes (96” x 240”/288”)

Properties

AR500 steel is one of the more abrasion resistant steels available. As you increase hardness, however, you are creating a more rigid steel. This means that AR500 is less weldable and formable than other types of AR steel.

AR500 has the following chemical and mechanical properties:

  • Welding = Decent
  • Machining = Good
  • Abrasion Resistance = Excellent
  • Corrosion Resistance = Good
  • Forming = Fair

Steel Requirements

AR500 meets ASTM E10 standards for mechanical properties. The flatness and thickness standards are also 50% of that specified in ASTM A-6 with special tolerances available..

Benefits of AR500

The main benefit of AR500 steel plate, like any abrasion resistant steel, is its ability to resist wear and abrasion. Because of this, it can lead to less down time and can improve the longevity of your equipment by reducing erosion and wear. All of this, in turn, can lead to maximized production time.
